Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be the WhatsApp group admin?

No. Anyone who can add a member to the group can add Banter's number, and anyone in the group can send the claim code. The person who pays controls the settings from the web dashboard — group admin status doesn't matter.

How does Banter join my group?

You add Banter's WhatsApp number to your group like a regular member, then send the one-time claim code from your dashboard (e.g. !claim AB12CD34). That links the group to your account and switches the bot on with your settings.

What can I customize?

Everything: the bot's name, its personality (built-in or written by you), reply length and formatting, which of the 18 commands are enabled, keyword reactions and their trigger chance, auto-translation and its thresholds, Winner of the Day timing, image generation, memory depth, custom knowledge, and the AI model itself.

What does Banter remember?

Recent messages for context, a rolling summary per group, and explicit "memories" (facts, birthdays, running jokes). You can view, edit and delete every memory from the dashboard, and a per-group mute or disconnect stops listening instantly.

Which AI models does it use?

Claude (Anthropic) by default, with OpenAI, Google Gemini and xAI Grok selectable per workspace. On the Pro plan you can bring your own API keys.

Can it respond to every message?

Banter replies when it's @mentioned, when someone replies to its messages, or when its name is used — plus optional keyword reactions at a probability you control. It doesn't answer every message; that keeps groups pleasant and your usage predictable.

What happens when I hit my monthly reply limit?

The bot posts a single polite note in the group (once per day at most) and goes quiet until the month rolls over or you upgrade. Nothing is lost.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes — subscriptions are month-to-month through Stripe. You can cancel from the billing portal and keep using the paid features until the period ends.

Is this an official WhatsApp product?

No. Banter is an independent product and is not affiliated with WhatsApp LLC or Meta. It joins your group as a regular member using its own number.
